    Yep, i love orks/orcs. Always inspired by their strength and brutality. You could try to put a little civilization into this species. Wow had cities and villages, and even pig farming, for Tolkien the orks represent a grim version of industrialization (which is cranked up for 40k orks and their brutal machines). Turning the orcs into super peaceful mexicans is not it. Ive seen people reinterpret that concept to more of a mix of tribal and banditos which totally works for orcs. Not whatever hippie peace shit that this modern DnD stuff is. Loved the video....although the blown up jpegs did effect the experience a little (hard to admire the great artwork of orks when their images were probably the 1st things grabbed off google images by your editor).

    Its simple and not as confusing as people think it is. Its just, World War 2 Science Fiction/Fantasy. Thats it. People get caught up in the whole U.S vs Germany thing but there are plenty of portrayals of other nations and factions that were in world war 2, once again I will harken back to Mutant Chronicles, as well as Iron harvest, and I'll throw in Full Metal Alchemist for good measure. All may not incorporate diesel but a dirty secret is, war is more important than diesel in dieselpunk. The war has happened and we are feeling the side-effects there of, war is going on and the bombing is on the horizon, or we are on the edge of our seat's because it can go off at any minute. This is the looming shadow of the genre. Steampunk doesn't need a war, dieselpunk does, probably because it is inspired by a era defined by war.

    Love the video! Very informative. Please make more! The more modern day defender or definer of the Diesel Punk genre would be a video game called Frost Punk, I think. (I’ve never actually played it so I could be totally wrong, but I’ve seen lots of people making the case that it’s Diesel Punk for video games. Or, so they say.) I would argue that Disney’s Tale Spin which was a cartoon, and a damn good one, was a GOOD Disney version of Diesel Punk. That’s just my take on it, but it feels like it could be a good foundation for what diesel punk could really look like and could be. It’s certainly not Steampunk. Love the history and thoughts though. Perhaps someone will come along and make Diesel Punk an actual genre one day. I would argue that to do that, they need a proper understanding of the military as a institution, of soldiers, and of industrial societies, whether they’re in a war or not, or in a war zone, or not. Try the Troy Rising books by John Ringo. That one gave a real good story about industrial base, industrial visionaries, military logistics and the people on all levels of that sort of thing, from front lines to top lines, to media, to bottom lines. Great story, and is relevant to your topics of world building, industry, logistics, and good story built with or around it. All that said, loved your video, love your work, want more!!!!!

    I’m not really in any “punk” community, but from looking around at the different communities the biggest differences seem to be from the Individual zeitgeists of certain time periods. Things like steampunk are heavily influenced by the events of the Victorian era. While something like atompunk would be molded from the history of the Cold War. Let’s take your opinion on how Dieselpunk is more popular in the US for example. Dieselpunk takes its zeitgeist from the period between 1910 and 1950. If you consider what happened in Europe around that time, it’s not really surprising that not a lot of people would want to reopen those old wounds.

    I would say that Dieselpunk is a closer cousin to "Weird WW2" than steampunk itself, but all of these subgeneras are related to at least in the literary sense, alt-history. From my own, un-academic looks, DP is more video game and wargame based. I heavily disagree that is an American thing only. There are several Slavic artists that draw DP style mecha in the Eastern European landscape and a lot of their work shows up in the German made game, Iron Harvest. Of course, this is not to mention that Last Exile is just one of many cool WW1 era-ish animes out there. Modern ones deal more with the mecha side of things, as do many wargames. I think it has more to do with modern historical times vs anything else. When Steampunk became big, it was during the Obama adminstration and the Wall Street Occupy movement in American culture. Thus you had somewhat of a punk and anti-capitalist mood of wanting to create your own things w/o the genera being pinned down to a single IP like how Disney controls everything. So it used to be more open to everyone. Sadly, now a days it seems to be more upper middle class people that have formed cliches around one or two people at conventions making the rebellious spirit go away. DP does have a similar punk vibe but it's more commonly seen at anime conventions (since they are a main gathering place for every subculture out there) , where people are younger and already have that rebellious spirit within them

    • @RadioRetrofuture
      @RadioRetrofuture 26 дней назад

      Never seen 'Weird WW2' named as a genre before, and couldn't find any references. Only familiar with Weird West, the unknown precursor of the Steampunk. Is that is what you are referencing? Regarding the American thing. I think you misunderstood me. I was talking about inspiration, not location. If you mean Jakub Rosalski's work, personally, I think the influences of pulp and other Western media are very present in his work. The games associated to his illustrations, also use the genre tropes of Steampunk I don't agree on the era stuff. The events you name happened before the big explosion of Steampunk on the convention scene, including in Europe and Japan. In all the interviews that I've had, my guests reference pop culture from the 40s to 80s. I don't think it's a rebellion against Disney either, consider a. Alot of Steampunk is inspired by Disney properties. And b. many Disney creators drew Steampunk for a time.

    I've always saw Dieselpunk as extremely similar to Steampunk, just trade out the victorian era with 1940's post industrial era, and trade the steam for diesel, and the brass for iron. The genre themes would be pulling from the times for which they are inspired, which leaves quite the overlap in many regards. Though it would be important to look towards the iconic scenes or scenarios, such as an iron mech trotting across a war torn trench line, or an airship floating adjacent a magnificent tower of bronze and clockwork. There is a genuine feel to these genre's, Steampunk oozes its victorian grace and political intrigue, as Dieselpunk carries an aura of war torn industrialization, and a turning away from nature. We may find the largest differences between them, less in the esthetic and more so those inspiring time periods that should govern more than I think we allow them to. For instance, swords...If you are in a Steampunk universe swords are quite common, if you are in a Dieselpunk universe they are MUCH less common, and not even considered a viable weapon, why? World War 2 inspirations, guns, tanks, and rifles. Of course that is accepting the notion that all those involved are historically inspired, but than again the lack of historical appreciation maybe one of the reasons why we have such a hard time telling them apart. After all, there is quite the difference between post industrial, and victorian eras. In the end, if you really want to know the difference, watch a trailer for the 2011 Three Musketeers movie, and than watch a trailer for the Mutant Chronicles movie, that should set a stark contrast.

    Oh god, there's a fifth one... anyway, I digress. As I said in the server, I maintain that the discussion of character-driven vs plot-driven is just low-concept vs high-concept, the nomenclature is just different (wrong). Additionally, the term "plot-driven" is a misnomer as the plot IS driven, it cannot drive itself, unless one takes into account the world that exists within the story and the circumstances within that world and mislabel them as the plot. That makes no sense to me since the plot is just the sequence of events that happen within a story, regardless of whether the characters are influencing those events or reacting to them. Side note, they completely dropped the ball with the Borg. They went from an absolutely terrifying enemy that pushed the Federation out of it's stagnation and forced it to take a more aggressive role for the sake of survival, to a waste of special effects and makeup.

    Hmmm... Interesting, so the real problem Is to implement magic carefully so that It doesn't obstruct technology, I believe Final Fantasy does that correctly on the 4th and 7th one. Is not magic persay but "materia" and that magic Is limited to them. Or for example, BioShock that uses "plasmids" that flow through your veins and produces different results, like shooting lighting, Fire, being able to use telekinesis, etc, etc. Hmmm... I have a lot to think about, I am making a roleplay campaign with these two themes.

    Love the new style implemented in the video editing and the music selection was on point. The content was absolutely intriguing and this blend of history, tech, and sci-fi is really taking a unique form of its own. Good freakin' job! 🦀
